The house was built for Joseph Tournoir (1780-1836) from a Louisiana Creole family. In 1805, he had married Roseline Porche (1790-1862), whose mother was Euphrosine Riché. Roseline was granted divorce in 1827, claiming Tounoir’s adultery with a “concubine.” Fannie Riché was said to be the illeg. daughter of Frederic Michel Riché by one of his slaves named Perine, so a cousin of Roseline. Fannie was emancipated by Tournoir in 1823 on condition of continued service, and he left her his property, including his many enslaved.
Her rights to inherit as a free woman of color were upheld in court. She married Jean Baptiste Medan in 1840. Fannie pledged loyalty to the Union in the Civil War but claimed loss of livestock and damage to structures by Union troops, and she won a large settlement in court in 1879. After Fannie’s 1892 death, ownership passed to her granddaughter Marié Antonia Cavelier, who eventually sold the property in the early 20th C.
